Slipping back through the peloton, dropped and alone, lost in the suffocating fumes of the following cars, the effort, the toil, the struggle, the pride, all coming to an undignified and uncomfortable end in the back of a dogged little van. Cycling at its grittiest and most emotional, battles to stay clear from the broom wagon were no less courageous than the efforts of race winners.
