A torque wrench is no longer optional on a modern bike. Carbon fibre frames, stems, seatposts and handlebars all carry manufacturer torque specifications, and for good reason. Under-torque a carbon seatpost clamp and it slips under load; over-torque it and the damage is internal, invisible, and potentially catastrophic. The same applies to stems, bar clamps, rotor bolts, and bottom bracket cups across aluminium and carbon alike.
