Mavic Comete Ultimate II Shoe
Competition Winner
At the beginning of 2020, we launched a competition with our friends at Mavic for people to design their own custom Mavic Comete Ultimate II Road Cycling Shoes. Nothing was off-limits, it was the perfect opportunity for people to let loose with their colouring pens and pencils and get their creative juices flowing.
We were inundated with a vast number of beautiful and incredibly creative ideas but there could only be one lucky winner that would see their design produced on a pair of shoes that they could wear with pride. Our panel of judges had an incredibly hard decision when it came to whittling down the entries for the Instagram vote. It was then the turn of our Instagram community to decide the overall winner.
That lucky person was Mateusz Czachor and we sat down with him to ask a few questions in regards to the inspiration behind the unique design of the shoes and learn a little more about Mateusz’s cycling background.
What was the inspiration behind the design?
Apart from my cycling as a hobby (I was pro racer here in Poland and now I still enjoy cycling), I'm a graphic designer and also an artist making graphics and painting. Since I started art studies, my main inspiration was to follow geometry and abstraction. The relationship between shapes, colours and contrasts.
I abandoned academic painting (anatomy, figurativeness) in favour of my research on geometric abstraction. Straight lines and colour contrasts between them give me the greatest satisfaction. Then I created my first compositions which I am best known for in my artistic work.
As soon as I started my artistic career, I tried to combine my cycling life with an artistic one and off the back of this, I created my master's degree piece which was called „+CO.ART CNPT” > . The design of the shoes took inspiration from my previous work, which can be viewed on my Instagram profile. I wanted to transfer my work to a new type of surface - like cycling shoes!
I believe that applied art should not stand in a museum - it should also surround us in normal life. That is why I will be proud to wear these shoes out on the road, rather than just have them on display at home.
As I mentioned before I am an ex pro and still enjoy cycling. I try to ride every day and do everything I can on my bike. Whether it's commuting, training, cycling adventures or just going on holidays I always have my bike with me.
What were your first impressions when the shoes arrived?
I really don't know what to say, they are absolutely amazing! I thought my graphic would be a print on the shoes, but when I saw it, I noticed it was a hand-painting masterpiece. I’m very impressed with the attention to detail and quality of workmanship and it will be a great pleasure to be able to ride on them.
The Mavic Comete Ultimate II Road Cycling Shoes are a premium piece of kit that balances weight and stiffness to ensure you are performing at your best on the bike. The shoes are made up of two main pieces, the first, an incredibly stiff Energy Shell Carbon outsole and the second, an internal, exoskeleton removable bootie. The exoskeleton is constructed from patented Matryx, which is a material that is both breathable and supportive, with soft internal fabric that adapts to your foot for superior comfort on the bike all day.
Pedalling efficiency is ensured through a low stack height of the Energy Shell Carbon outsole. It’s incredibly thin at only 4.5mm which gives you a close connection to the pedals meaning you also don’t lose any of those important watts. Mavic spent multiple hours of research and development in the biomechanics lab to perfect this.
Mavic’s Ergo Dial II system ensures that your feet are kept secure inside the shoe and help to limit any movement. They can be easily adjusted whilst on the bike meaning you have no excuses when it comes to the town sign sprint. Weighing in at just 210 grams per shoe in a size 8.5 UK these are the perfect shoes for crushing your local Strava segment PB.
