Assos Equipe RS Winter Jacket

The Assos Equipe RS Winter Jacket combines innovative materials, a highly sophisticated construction and an ergonomic fit to result in a tremendously refined performance for dedicated year-round riders within cold, fast-paced riding scenarios. As such, it is not a jacket designed for maximum insulation, but rather one which works brilliantly when working hard in cold conditions and can be paired with other inner or outer layers and conditions dictate.

Dual-layer material arrangements that feature the windproof and water-repellent SPHERE textiles, as well as insulating linings, are featured on the front, the upper back and the forearm panels to grant total protection from the winter weather. These materials are also highly breathable to keep the rider dry from the inside, even during more intense efforts. Supplementing the primary materials are the ZigZaggy foam textile, that protects the upper arms, and the OSMOS Heavy fabric that thoroughly insulates the kidney and pelvis area.

All of these textile panels are linked together via Assos' aeroFIT pattern. This cut follows the contours of the body comfortably when in the riding position to significantly lower aerodynamic drag. The Raw-Cut waist hem complements this advanced fit by seamlessly integrating with other clothing layers. At the same time, this hem also possesses a bi-modular elastic construction to keep the jacket perfectly positioned at all times.

Diffusor valves are sewn into the front of the shoulders and this channels a metered amount of air through the jacket's layers to enhance breathability and moisture-wicking. The temperature regulation theme continues with the Thermobooster Pod pocket. This pouch stores extra clothing layers neatly within the centre back panel so that they can be taken out and worn during colder conditions.

Three back pockets store ride essentials and feature lids to protect the contents from the elements while a double slider zip completes the jacket by allowing personalised levels of ventilation.

Andy G,

Having updated a lot of kit in 2019/20 where others were end of life (thin in all the wrong places) I have not beed disappointed with any of the ASSOS Equipe range. Having been really impressed with the 2/3 range and technical features/fit the JOHDAH was eagerly anticipated. This review will be a little longer than most, but it's only fair given the investment you are about to make or are considering. OK so the Elephant in the room (The price) like many/most/all I fell off the chair, having picked my self up and checked the vision/bump on the head and realised it was punching a new ceiling it was time to think really long and hard if it could be justified and how I could sell it to my wife (this is not usually hard as she appreciates the bike makes me a better person). Having received the delivery Saturday it is clear the thought and attention to detail is extensive and the quality from ASSOS is simply 2nd to none. Having recently put their customer service to the test this is also matched so you are covered. First ride test: The day was damp, one of those questionable days where wet gear is too much and dry gear too little so I took the decision to use the JOHDAH to tests it's marketing credentials. For such a technical jacket the fit is fantastic, loads of protection but the overall bulk of the jacket is very condensed. I love the secondary zip with section to protect the chest (ie heat source) and the heavy duty main zip is easy to handle both initially and on the ride along with all the usual features (pockets). Expecting to be a little too warm the boil in a bag wet weather gear of yesterday year is thankfully a thing of the past. The ride was a hilly route riding both casually and at intensity and the climate control excellent (10-12 degrees). Easy to adjust the zip if/when needed but the vortex shoulder vents and rear shoulder portions maintained the perfect equilibrium and this is a challenge when that middle ground. When I got back there was a little moisture in the jacket from condensation/sweat but this was never noticed with a thin long sleeve merino layer and the jacket once hung dried quickly so did not interfere. Although the ride was only 3hrs, the standard winter challenge of ride for 2hrs before a quick coffee is often met me 2hrs return just above the point of pneumonia, but I anticipate not in this jacket which is a triumph for the die hard. In short once you get over the price, this jacket is nothing short of brilliant. The classic design of ASSOS Equipe RS at the moment with subtle detailing in shoulders and pockets accents is fantastic and this is my new go to choice for winter alongside the 2/3 Jersey under the same design. Chapeaux ASSOS cutting edge and hopefully over time you can bring the price down, but do see why the cost and where the R&D has gone in so a solid investment if looked after.

Alex A,

I bought this jacket on launch along with the matching tights and have given both a good winter of riding. As the other review mentions, the elephant in the room is the price. This jacket is expensive but when compared to the outdoor industry it doesn't seem quite so pricey. Immediately on pulling the jacket out of it's very nice box, you can tell its something special. I've taken the jacket out on everything from 10 degrees and dry to 0 degrees and wet. It's performed incredibly well across all conditions with different base layer options. In the dry, its breathable, fitted and regulates body temperature brilliantly. I cant think of an occasion where I felt overdressed, even when pushing on. In the wet is where it really performs well. It does all of the above but with the additions of rendering my rain jacket all but redundant this winter. Only needing to a rain cape out for the very worst conditions. Although this jacket isn't "waterproof" it will hold off a few hours of steady rain and thats enough to keep me comfortable across almost any winter ride. I do think the middle of the back pocket is a bit of a gimmick, I've never used it myself and barely have the shoulder flexibility to get to it if I wanted to. I've a few nice cycling jackets but they've all been retired to those days when my Equipe RS jacket is in the wash. I reach for this jacket as often as I can. Yes, its expensive but I feel like it's the only jacket I'd ever need. Overall, incredibly happy with my purchase and genuinely feel like it's money well spent.

About Assos

Swiss precision. Half a century of obsession.

Assos of Switzerland was founded in 1976 by Toni Maier-Moussa with a single ambition: reinvent cycling apparel from the inside out. The Lycra cycling short, modern bibs, the chamois as we know it — all began here. Half a century later, the obsession with precision and ride feel hasn't moved an inch.

Assos still designs and engineers every piece in Switzerland. The brand operates its own laboratory, its own development pool of test riders, and its own assembly line for the most demanding garments in the range.
