Sometimes, things are best left unchanged, and this is certainly the case with Campagnolo's ultra-torque axle. Now in its sixth year, but still hailed as the leading spindle for stiffness, power transmission and weight. The narrow side profile has not prevented the bearings from being located outside the bottom bracket shell, to augment rigidity from increased axle diameter.

However, Campagnolo have greatly improved the chainrings to give new efficiency to shifting as part of the X.P.S.S.™ project. The double standardised bolt circle diameter (BCD) gives you impeccably solid stiffness without penalising you in terms of weight by extending the carbon fibre crank near the chainrings with 112 mm for the small bolt circle diameter and 145 mm for the large.

Weight has been shed elsewhere thanks to the integration of the chainring and crank mounting system. With this you also get easier maintenance which is always positive.
