Bike Wheel Tools

Wheel maintenance is one of the most satisfying things you can do in a home workshop, as well-built, correctly tensioned wheel rolls faster, lasts longer, and handles predictably. Whether you're straightening a slightly buckled rim after a bad pothole, building a new wheelset from scratch, or maintaining tension across a set of hand-built race wheels, the right tools make the difference between guesswork and precision. Spoke keys, truing stands, and spoke tension meters are the core of any wheel toolkit.

Spoke Keys

The spoke key (or spoke wrench) is the fundamental wheel tool, a small, precise tool that engages the spoke nipple to increase or decrease spoke tension, allowing you to true a wheel laterally and radially and correct dish. Simple in concept, demanding in execution: spoke nipples are small, easily rounded, and come in multiple sizes. Using the wrong key or an ill-fitting one is the fastest way to destroy a nipple and turn a five-minute truing job into a full spoke replacement.
