I purchased this in the lead-up to the Black Friday sales and was impressed by the deal I managed to snag—especially when compared to what other retailers were pricing this at. Previously, I was using a Garmin Edge 830, and the move to this device has been a noticeable upgrade. The larger screen is a game-changer, offering much better visibility, whether I’m glancing at my stats mid-ride or navigating through tricky routes. The extended battery life is another significant plus; it easily handles long rides without needing to worry about recharging. The addition of features like Climb Pro Anywhere really stands out. It's incredibly helpful for planning climbs during rides, and it's something I find myself using regularly. The layout is definitely an improvement over the Edge 830, with a cleaner and more intuitive design, though there are still a few quirks here and there that could be ironed out. That said, it works seamlessly with all the usual Garmin accessories—my heart rate monitor, cadence sensor, and power meter paired without a hitch. Customising the display screens is straightforward, and I appreciate how easy it is to arrange the metrics to suit my needs. The increased physical size of the unit is a big win for me. I know some riders might be concerned about the added weight, but honestly, it’s negligible, especially given how much more functional the larger screen makes it. As for the new hazard reporting features, I’d say they’re okay—they do the job, but they’re not a game-changer. If I’m being honest, sometimes I wonder if the real hazard is the rider rather than anything the device might warn you about! Still, it’s a nice addition for those who want an extra layer of safety. Overall, this is a fantastic upgrade for anyone looking to step up from an older Garmin or a smaller unit. It balances usability with advanced features and delivers great value, especially at the price I got it for. Highly recommended!

I've been using the Garmin Edge 1040 for a while now and, overall, I’m really happy with it. The battery life is excellent, the screen is bright and easy to read in all conditions, and the range of metrics and training tools is spot on for both structured sessions and long endurance rides. GPS accuracy and route planning are solid too, which makes it a great companion for exploring new routes. The only real gripe I have is with the auto-navigation when you miss a turn — it’s not always intuitive. Sometimes the rerouting takes a few moments too long or suggests odd alternatives, and I’ve found myself having to stop to manually re-check the route more often than I’d like. If Garmin could make that process smoother and a bit more user-friendly, it would be close to perfect.

Q & A

7 questions answered

  1. Will 1040 fit on a low bontrager blendr mount - can't find a definitive answer anywhere.

    Asked by Neillc (North Yorkshire)

    1. Hi there, The Edge 1040 is compatible with the Bontrager Blendr system using the Garmin mount. As the 1040 is one of the larger head units, a low-profile mount can be a less secure fit, so a higher or sturdier Blendr mount is the safer choice for a computer this size. Many thanks Joe W

  2. Is the USB cable type USB-C or the older USB-A?

    Asked by philnic (Peterborough)

    1. Hi Phil, USB-C on the device, USB-A to USB-C cable in the box. Any USB-C to USB-C cable will work if you're charging from a C-only port. Thanks,

      Matt B

    2. Hi there, This is USB - C Many thanks Joe W
