Bike Chain Tools & Chain Checkers
Two tools every home mechanic should own: a chain tool to break and size your chain, and a chain checker to know when it's time to replace it. Used together, they protect your drivetrain investment, a worn chain that's left too long accelerates cassette and chainring wear far faster than the chain itself costs to replace.

Chain tools: break, size, rebuild
A bike chain tool (or chain breaker) pushes the rivet pin through the chain's inner and outer plates, allowing you to shorten a new chain to length, remove a damaged link, or disassemble the drivetrain for a deep clean.
Standard pliers or improvised tools won't work here. Bicycle chain rivets require precise alignment and controlled force, the drive pin must travel straight through the plates without bending them. A quality chain tool from a brand such as Park Tool makes this repeatable and clean every time.
Chain checkers: know when to replace
A chain checker (or chain wear indicator) measures chain elongation, the gradual stretching that occurs as the rollers and pins wear. Once a chain reaches 0.5% wear (0.75% for some systems), it has stretched enough to alter how it meshes with cassette teeth and chainrings. Left unchecked, it accelerates wear across the whole drivetrain. Replacing a chain at the right interval, typically every 2,000–4,000km depending on conditions, chain spec, and lubricant ,costs a fraction of replacing a cassette or chainring prematurely.
