Roval Alpinist CLX II Disc Wheelset
Weighing in at substantially less than 1,300 grams, the Roval Alpinist CLX II Disc Wheelset is incredibly light for a tubeless-ready, disc brake set-up making it the perfect choice for big mountains, but painstaking testing and development also means that it is very strong too.
The hooked rim construction allows the use of either tubed or tubeless tyres for maximum choice and raises the maximum safe pressure that can be used. Installation of the tyres should be simpler too, as the wheels’ dimensions have been fractionally reduced to provide a touch more slack in the tyre bead, a feature that will be appreciated by anyone who has battled to fit a tight tyre.
The 33mm deep profile keeps the weight down and handling easy, even in difficult wind conditions, and the 21mm internal width is ideal for supporting wider modern tyres. The blunt shape still offers an aerodynamic advantage over shallow rims though, so descending and sprinting will still be rapid.
Weight has also been dropped from the hubs, with the new LFD model 50 grams lighter than the previous version. Internals from DT Swiss’ 180 hubs ensures very quick engagement thanks to the Ratchet EXP system that is great for powering out of hairpins or launching an attack. SINC ceramic bearings reduce rolling friction and increase durability whilst DT Swiss’ lightest and most aerodynamic aerolite spokes tie the build together.
