With a long history working with the world’s top professional cyclists, Specialized has filtered the technological features they have invested in their top of the range S-Works range down into some of the more affordable road bikes in their fleet. The SL4 Comp Di2 Road Bike 2014 is just one of those bikes that has benefited from the likes of Mark Cavendish and Vicenzo Nibali’s feedback. Here Specialized have produced a highly competent road bike ideal for racing, sportives or just all day riding. This very attractive package is finished off with the latest electronic groupset from Shimano to make this bike the ultimate road bike for 2014.

SL4 FACT 9r carbon has been used in the frame construction to make a frame incredibly stiff yet also dampens the road buzz. This extra rigidity is transferred into more direct power transfer, a better handling and sharper ride. A tapered headtube improves comfort, as does the FACT full carbon fork. Giving the rider a good balance between a comfortable and aggressive ride.

Constructed using four monocoque sections to make a strong and light frame, with internal cable routing to keep the clean, aerodynamic look and to reduce wear.

Major development has been invested in the new OSBB bottom bracket, one-piece shell. Stiffer than ever before, combined with a reliable, stylish FSA Gossamer Pro BB30 crank, that does not just look good but also gives a direct and uncompromised power delivery straight through the pedals onto the road. No watts will be wasted with this frame. This is the same one-piece shell that is used in the sensational, top of the range, S-Works bikes.

So we now know this is a competent race or sportive ready frame, it would be a shame not to do it justice with an equally reliable and efficient finishing kit. Specialized have delivered on this too, with the bike being decked out with Shimano’s amazingly smooth, electric, stylish Ultegra Di2 11-speed groupset, providing touch of the button precision shifting.

A Fulcrum S5 wheelset gives the bike an Italian flare and provides a lightweight, attractive and highly durable set of hoops, rolling well and responsive for changes in pace.

These bulletproof wheels have been paired up with an equally solid, responsive set of 23 millimetre tyres. Specialized Turbo Elite tyres, durable and provide a low rolling resistance.

Tarmac is the name of the game here and no expense has been spared on the handlebars and stem. All Tarmac branded, created using the ultra stiff, lightweight aluminium. Comfort and weight has been added with the Specialized Comp Carbon seatpost which has been created using S-Works top of the range technology.

Specialized paint schemes are never dull and this carbon, red and white combination is no different. Bold and clean and looking incredibly fast.

52/36 chainrings paired with a 11/28 cassette is perfect for racing but also gives you the option for climbing that Alpine mountain you have been aiming all year to conquer. Either way this bike is more than capable whether racing, completing that epic sportive or just riding to the café. The only thing you need to worry about is not living up to speed of this rapid bike’s other prestigious owners!
