Nuun-Sigma Sports-London Team
2019 Riders and Sponsors
With a former UCI Continental rider and British Land Speed Record Holder joining for the 2019 season, Nuun-Sigma Sports-London Race Team’s roster is looking stronger than ever. Announcing their new riders and sponsors, Sigma Sports' is proud to continue its support to the popular London-based amateur cycling team.
Who is the Nuun-Sigma Sports-London Race Team?
Established in 2012 by Cameron Fraser, the team is a regular sight at top-tier races such the Tour Series, Lincoln GP, National TT championships plus numerous National B and track races across the south of the UK. The focus for the team is to represent their sponsors and create content to support the team’s ethos: a group of experienced cyclists who balance full-time work and family life with racing at a high level. Picking up results along the way is a bonus.
Two new recruits, former Dimension Data for Qhubeka Continental rider, Shameeg Salie, and the current British land speed record holder for human-powered vehicles, Ken Buckley, add some serious firepower to the close-knit and well-drilled squad.
Shameeg Salie, a promising 23-year-old South African rider whose palmares includes a fifth place in the Tour of Durban Classic, fourth in the U23 South Africa Road Championships and second in the South African Team Pursuit Nationals. Spending 2018 racing for Team Randwater-Transnet, Shameeg is moving to London to work and study whilst gaining exposure to top-tier racing, both in the UK and Europe as part of his future ambitions as a full-time cyclist.
Time trial and breakaway specialist Ken Buckley joins from Morvelo-Basso, having previously won the Europa Trophy Masters Road Race in Mallorca, as a guest rider for the team in 2017. Buckley also won the National Masters Circuit Championships in the same year and will add to the team’s already impressive line up of strong time trialists.
A Wealth of Experience
Retaining many of the team’s riders from 2018, the 14-strong team includes former full-time riders in James Moss and Martin Lonie and current National Masters Points Race Champion Tom Hargreaves. Chris McNamara is one of the teams' most accomplished riders achieving multiple road and time trial wins in 2018. All of the teams' riders compete as amateurs and manage to balance training and racing at a high level alongside their full-time careers, education and family responsibilities. One of the key goals of the team is to inspire everyday cyclists by making racing both more approachable and achievable.
The Bikes and Equipment
Switching from rim to disc brake equipped road bikes for 2019, Cannondale will be providing the team with their new SystemSix road bikes. Complementing these bikes, ENVE's new 5.6 tubeless Disc Wheelset will be paired with Continental's newly released GP5000 tubeless tyres. This combination of race bike, wheels and tyres will be well-suited to the road and weather conditions in the UK, particularly early in the season.
Cameron Fraser, rider and team owner of Nuun-Sigma Sports-London said -
“As the team enters its seventh season it’s great to show that sustainability is possible in amateur cycling through providing a great return on investment for our sponsors in the form of continuous cycling content whilst operating the team within its means. At a time when many other domestic teams are, sadly, disappearing, which in some cases is no fault of their own, the longevity of Nuun-Sigma Sports-London is down to hard work behind the scenes, developing long-term relationships and the team and riders delivering a good return to the sponsors year on year. It is also down to an appreciation of the sports market and sticking to an operational model which can endure. I am very thankful to our sponsors for supporting the team year on year and hope that British Cycling will work together more closely with teams and organisers to reach a sustainable model for amateur and professional cycling in the UK”.
