Choosing your road bike
Lightweight, streamlined and built for speed, road bikes are precision-engineered machines that help you go faster and further than ever before on two wheels. Whether you're buying your first or third road bike, it needs to be something special and with bikes from CUBE to Van Rysel, we've got you covered.
If aesthetics matter to you and your style, it's worth learning more about road frame geometry.
We offer professional bike fitting in-store to help you harness the benefits of comfortable, injury-free and more powerful rides on your road bike.
Whether you're looking for an endurance road bike or something a little bit more aggressive, it's worth paying attention to the details that shape your time in the saddle.
Road bike frames
The material, size and geometry of the frame determine how a road bike looks and performs.
Where carbon road bikes offer a lightweight and nimble ride feel, aluminium road frames make for a sturdier, more rugged bike that's just as capable in winter weather as it is on those long, dry summer days. For that classic road racer bike feel, try a steel frame.
We provide a world-class selection of carbon, aluminium and steel road bikes in sizes that range from 42cm and 43cm up to those with XXL frames, including 64cm. It's never been easier to find a bike that suits your height and build.
Road bike brakes
Any road bike needs brake components that are compatible not only with its frame, gearing and wheels but the demands you place on the bike too. If you're planning to ride some of the steepest segments in the country, it's generally recommended that you choose disc brakes. On flatter terrain and for ultra-lightweight climbing, many road riders still prefer rim brakes.
Many riders ask us if disc or rim brakes are better for a road bike but the answer really depends on your personal preferences. For improved safety, most premium road bikes issued with carbon wheels are those with disc frames.
Wheels
No lightweight road bike is complete without a quality pair of wheels and tyres to complete the setup. Most ready-to-ride bikes come with brilliant wheels but if you're building a bike from scratch – or are just particular about your bikes – this is especially important.
Carbon and aluminium road bike wheels dominate the market. We're proud to supply wheels by leading brands including Bontrager, DT Swiss, ENVE, Mavic and Zipp. You'll always have the option to upgrade your road bike into your dream build.
Typically, carbon rims are preferred amongst keen roadies. They offer improved aerodynamics, lower overall weight and increased responsiveness on the road. Aluminium wheels are generally more cost-effective and can prove incredibly useful for training in harsh weather.
